Why preparation matters
Paint shows every flaw. Holes, cracks, glossy old paint and dust all affect the final result. We fill and sand surfaces, remove loose paint and prime bare or patched areas so the new paint goes on evenly and lasts.
Preparation also takes time. A room may need a day or more before the first coat goes on, so we will explain the schedule when we look at the job.
Choosing colours and finishes
Ceilings are usually painted in matt paint, which hides imperfections. Walls can be matt, eggshell or satin depending on how busy the room is. Woodwork such as doors and skirting boards is often painted in a satin or eggshell finish, which can be wiped clean.
Always test colours on the wall in your room. Light changes a lot through the day.

Decorating homes across the SG postcode area
Homes in Stevenage, Hitchin, Letchworth Garden City, Knebworth, Baldock and the wider SG postcode area vary a lot. Older houses may have textured walls or several layers of old paint. Newer homes often need decorating after a move. We adapt our preparation to what we find.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
How many coats of paint will I need?
Most jobs need two coats for an even finish, especially when changing a dark colour to a light one. A primer or stain-block may be needed on bare or stained surfaces. We will confirm this when we look at the job.
Do I need to move my furniture?
We can move furniture where needed and cover what remains. Clearing small items in advance helps us work faster.
How long will the decorating take?
It depends on the size of the room, the preparation needed and the drying times between coats. We will give you a realistic timescale once we have seen the work.
Which paint finish is best for a bathroom or kitchen?
A washable finish such as satin or eggshell is usually a good choice for busy rooms, because it can be cleaned more easily than a matt finish.
